Originally created to tell the story of the early British settlers to this region, the Otago Settlers Museum now celebrates all the peoples of Otago including indigenous Maori, the Chinese who came initially to work the goldfields in the 19th century, and successive waves of migrant groups, including those from Lebanon, Poland, Holland, the Pacific Islands and many parts of Asia.
Larnach Castle
New Zealand’s only castle resides on the Dunedin Peninsula. The castle began construction in 1871 being built by William Larnach for his beloved wife Eliza Jane Guise.
A workforce of 200 men spent 3 years before the family was able move in to the castle. It took a further 12 more years for European craftsman to adorn the interior with only the finest materials from all over the world. Construction was finally completed in 1887 with the affixing of a elegant ballroom which was Larcnach’s gift to his daughter on her 21st birthday.
