Lawrence

Named after Sir Henry Lawrence, a hero of the Lucknow military campaign of 1857. Lawrence is a town steeped in history. Located in Central Otago the township is inhabited by approximately 550 people.

Lawrence became the focal point of Otago’s gold rush after the discovery of gold in Gabriel’s Gully by Gabriel Reid in mid 1962. At the time, it is estimated that double the population of Dunedin lived around the banks of the Tuapeka River.

Lawrence contains many businesses catering to visitors. Creating an exciting place to stay where you can enjoy tranquil and historical town with the luxury of first class places to stay, visit and eat.

Visit the local Goldfields Museum, which depicts the life of the early settlers. Also situated in the town is Anthem House, 17 Whitehaven St, the house where JJ Wood who composed the New Zealand National Anthem lived. Or simply visit the information centre to enquire about what you can do, and where you can go.
