Central Attractions
Central Otago. A unique and enchanting part of the South Island. Dominated by mountain ranges and the Clutha River. Although only lightly populated today, Central Otago was once a land of riches.
In May 1861 a prospector discovered gold in what is now known as Gabriel's Gully in Lawrence. This find revolutionised the region attracting prospectors from around the country and around the world.
After the end of the gold rush
the region turned to farming and fruit production which, to this day, is still the main economic source of Central Otago.
Although the gold may be gone there is still plenty of attractions for visitors to Central Otago, from it's breathtaking scenery to it's recreational activities. Central Otago has something for the most discerning of visitors.
