Cromwell
60km east of Queenstown, Cromwell is a relaxed township. Just a stones throw away from the placid Lake Dunstan.
Established in 1863, Cromwell was settled by miners after the discovery of gold in the region. At the conclusion of the gold rush, Cromwell became a service town. Priding itself on farming and stone fruit production.
Originally located at the junction of the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers. Part of Cromwell was relocated after the construction of the Clyde Dam in 1993. The construction of the dam formed what is now Lake Dunstan, causing what was formerly the town centre to become flooded. Many of the historic, pioneer buildings were saved to be relocated to a historic area located on the lake shore.
There are many activities to take part in while staying at, or simply passing through Cromwell. Visit Jackson’s lookout which overlooks the lake. Or visit the reconstructed buildings of old Cromwell Historic Precinct which are active today with artists at work.
Glimpses of past gold mining can be seen at the old Carrick and Bendigo goldfields. Also in the nearby Bannockburn township gold mining can be experienced first hand at the Goldfields Mining Centre which has an operational sluice gun.
With the reputation as the ‘fruit bowl of the south’. You can be assured that you’ll be able to sample some of New Zealand’s finest apricots, nectarines, cherries, apples or peaches. While for the wine connoisseur, 60 percent of Central Otago’s famous vineyards are to be found in this region
