Larnach Castle
New Zealand’s only castle resides on the Dunedin Peninsula. The castle began construction in 1871 being built by William Larnach for his beloved wife Eliza Jane Guise.
A workforce of 200 men spent 3 years before the family was able move in to the castle. It took a further 12 more years for European craftsman to adorn the interior with only the finest materials from all over the world. Construction was finally completed in 1887 with the affixing of a elegant ballroom which was Larcnach’s gift to his daughter on her 21st birthday.
The castle was aquired in 1967 by the Barker family in a very poor state. At the time of purchase the ballroom had been used to pen sheep, grounds were overgrown, the castle was also empty of furniture and in a terrible condition. The Barker family restored the castle to its former glory and is now one of Dunedin’s most iconic landmarks.
Visitors to the castle can explore the gardens or the extensive collection of antiques gathered over the years by the barker family. Boutique Lodge accommodation is available in the castle gardens. With the majestic 3000 square foot ballroom also available to hold Weddings, Balls, Functions and celebrations.
