Maniototo

Welcome to the Maniototo, a leisurely 2 hour drive through spectacular country from Dunedin. There are many places to explore in this picturesque area. Visit the old gold mining towns of Naseby and Peteoroa. Remnants of gold digging can also be seen at Kyeburn, Golden Progress Mine and in the Hamiltons district.

Ranfurly is Maniototo’s main town. Here you’ll find restored 1930’s simple modernist art deco architecture. A must for any art lover. You can also visit Hayes Engineering Works at Oturehua. A place of impressive farming inventions during 1895-1933. The plant still operates and exports to this day. Close by is Gilchrist’s general store. Built in the 1930’s, the store is still trading.

During winter you can experience the ancient Scottish sport of curling in Naseby. Or you can fish the Taieri River, take the Maniototo section of the Central Otago Rail Trail, the Sowburn Walkway, or any other of the many established tracks through the forests.
