Roxburgh
Roxburgh is situated 150km west of Dunedin, lying alongside the Clutha River in the spectacular Teviot Valley. Although now only having a small population of around 750, the town was an important settlement during the gold rush of the 1860s. Roxburgh is now renowned for its stone fruit production, apples, apricots and cherries. You can purchase these fruits at roadside stalls along with delicious preserves, juices and fresh vegetables.
Settlers began farming in the late 1850s and gold miners followed soon after. After their departure they left behind historic relics and streets named after Scottish borders. There are beautiful mud-brick and stone buildings still in use today, and the gorge has also preserved Chinese rock shelters.
You can indulge in water sports on Lake Roxburgh, or fish for salmon or trout. Other activities available include walking the town river walkways, four wheel driving, mountain biking, or the opportunity to trek into the hills.
