Otago Peninsula
Stretching east along the seaward edge of Dunedin’s harbour is the Otago Peninsula. All year round this is the home of some of the world’s rare wildlife which can be seen where it lives.
Above the harbour entrance at the end of a beautiful drive is Taiaroa Head, the only mainland breeding colony of the royal albatross in the world.
Nearby you can get up close with the worlds rarest penguin, the yellow eye. On the secluded beaches are sea lions and their pups, fur seals, and blue penguins.
Visit the Aquarium at Portobello, renowned for marine research. Discover walking tracks and accessible uncrowded ocean beaches.
Dunedin is the careful guardian, committed to keeping the peninsula's treasures as they have always been, a promise for future generations. And here too is the only lived-in castle in the country, with its commanding view of the harbour and the hills of remarkable shape thrust up by ancient volcanoes.
