Royal Albatross Centre

The Royal Albatross Centre is home to the majestic Royal Albatross. It is the only mainland breeding colony in the world for these birds. They stand up to a metre in height with a wingspan of up to 3 metres. Despite being somewhat awkward on the ground, in the air they are anything but, able to reach swooping speeds of at least 115kmph.

The Royal Albatross tour runs for 60 minutes and allows impressive viewing from the Richdale Observatory. In addition you will be shown some spectacular video footage along with commentary for the duration of the Albatross Insight programme, which completes the tour. There are alternative tours offered on Tuesday mornings and during the mating and egg-laying season.

The Fort Taiaroa tour allows visitors into the underground beneath the Albatross colony. The tour lasts 30 minutes with the highlight of the tour being an 1885 6-inch Armstrong disappearing gun fully restored and in working condition, the only example of its kind in the world. Accompanied by enlightening displays that exhibit the history of the complex.

The Unique Taiaroa tour combines the Royal Albatross tour and the Fort Taiaroa tour and lasts 90 minutes.

A forth tour, the Taiaroa Experience runs between the September 16th to November 23rd. It includes the introductory video narrated by Sir David Attenborough and a short summary of the Maori and European history in the area. The tour finishes with a visit to Fort Taiaroa by way of underground tunnels.
